Charter Information/Guide
Chartering a luxury yacht
is a great experience and it is important to plan your vacation with a
broker, like Bare Fete, that works closely with the yacht management, and
especially someone that is familiar with each boat in order to help you
decide which is best. When it comes to luxury yachts and mega-yachts, the
captain acts as concierge and the staff should be aware of your expectations
prior to your vacation. We gather several details about you, your guests,
and your preferences for cuisine, desired activities, travel plans in
advance in order to prepare the yacht’s crew in order to create a customized
experience for you.
Each yacht charter
requires signing a contract, much of them are based on very similar
internationally accepted standards. Generally, a 50% deposit is required to
reserve the charter, with payment by wire transfer. Availability can be
fleeting, so once you make a decision, it is important to review the
contract and make payment in a timely fashion to make sure you reserve the
best yacht for your vacation. In general, the balance, APA (Advance
Provisioning Allowance) plus applicable taxes, and other extras are due at
least 30 days prior to departure.
Below is a review of some
of the terms that are commonplace in chartering and charter contracts:
Advance Provisioning
Allowance (APA)
The APA is a predetermined
deposit held by the captain to cover expenses during your trip. During your
trip, the amount will be accounted for, and updates from the captain shall
be presented to you periodically during your vacation.
Plus All
Yachts Charters are
generally a weekly basis, “plus all”, meaning the cost covers use of the
yacht, the cost of her crew and the fixed operating expenses that occur
during your trip, but not including extras.
Extras
In a standard "plus all"
contract the charter client will be responsible for extras, i.e. operating
expenses associated with the charter. Generally extras include fuel,
electricity docking fees, food, and drinks. Extras start at approximately
15%+ depending on the charters rate, and what the Yacht includes in its base
rate, which is specific to each boat. Some yachts may have all-inclusive
rates as well.
Sales Tax
Yacht Charter are subject
to sales tax which vary based on location, the range starts at 4% in the
Bahamas to almost 20% in the Mediterranean.
Delivery fee
It is often the case that
the yacht you charter may not be in your port of call, but delivery can be
arranged for a fee that varies based on the yacht, and location of the boat.
The fee is generally included as part of the contract language based usually
on delivery time and fuel expense.
Travel Insurance
We recommend travel
insurance for all charters. Travel Insurance protects your sizable
investment in your vacation. Several things can come up, and Travelex can
protect you in case you need to cancel last minute, which often means no
refunds form the yacht charter.
